LISTEN: Ag Secretary Adam Putnam On Wild Fire Danger & New Gun Restrictions

There are 57 wildfires burning across Florida right now, covering nearly 40,000 acres.

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam joined us this morning and said so far this is an above average dry season with regard to brush fires.  He says you can help curb the number of these blazes.

"Don't light a fire.  I mean, help a brother out.  There are several of these that are man-made.  Most of these have been lightning so far, but follow the burn restrictions.  Now is not the time to be burning your lawn debris, your trash in the backyard.  If you're camping, be sure and follow the rules.  If there's a burn ban, it's there for a reason.  It's not because we don't like fire."

Other tips include trimming trees and brush to ensure they're not right against your home and being sure you have garden hoses strategically placed in case a fire breaks out near your home.

We also spoke with Putnam about the new gun restrictions in place in Florida in the wake of the Parkland shooting.

Putnam is running for the Republican primary in Florida's gubernatorial race.
