Florida News That Impacts You – March 18th, 2024  

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.      

  • Governor DeSantis signed three bills into law aimed at curbing illegal immigration in Florida. The Driving Without a Valid Driver License law stiffens penalties for those driving without a driver’s license. The Identification Documents law prevents governments at all levels in the state from recognizing IDs issued to those lacking legal status by governments in other states. The Reclassification of Criminal Penalties law increases penalties for crimes committed by illegal immigrants who’ve previously been deported.  
  • The latest Census update showed four of the five fastest growing metros in the country were in Florida over the past year. The Villages/Wildwood was the fastest growing metro in the country followed by Lakeland/Winter Haven, Ocala and Port St. Lucie was 5th. Myrtle Beach South Carolina was the 4th fastest grower.  
  • Residents in the Lucerne Lakes 2 subdivision in Greenacres remain under a boil water advisory following Saturday’s water main break resulting from a contractor’s error. The break was fixed, and service was restored by Sunday morning, however officials left the boil water notice in effect for the time being as a precaution.  
  • Through Sunday voter turnout for Tuesday’s Presidential Preference Primary and Municipal elections in Palm Beach County totaled about 13% of eligible voters who’ve either voted early or by mail.  
  • Another warm day today with highs in the upper 80’s once again, or about 12 degrees warmer than usual for this date in advance of a cool front that’s set to make its way into our area tonight. Tuesday's high is expected to be in the low 70’s.  
  • Gas prices dropped a couple of cents per gallon over the weekend. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is currently $3.46 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.65 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.53 and in Indian River County the average is $3.50 per gallon.
