The city of Palm Beach Gardens is in our Election Spotlight.

There are no races in the city, but there are five ballot questions and they all have to do with annexation.

City leaders are attempting to take some unincorporated areas and place them within the city limits.

There are five zones the city wants to annex and each zone is the subject of its own referendum. About 8,000 people could be impacted and taxes are one way that would occur.

If voters in those zones want to be annexed, they would begin paying city taxes in six months. Deputy City Manager Lori LaVerriere says seven in ten properties in those proposed areas would save money. Even though taxes would rise, she says the increase would be offset by lower costs on utilities and garbage pickup.

Current residents of Palm Beach Gardens don't get to vote on the annexation questions, but people living in the five zones are being asked to cast a ballot.

The city has held public forums to address residents' questions.
