The man who helped bring football to Florida Atlantic University is on campus in Boca Raton today.

Howard Schnellenberger, the first coach of the FAU Owls football team, is signing copies of his book entitled "PASSING THE TORCH : Building Winning Football Programs … With a Dose of Swagger Along the Way.”

It's a memoir from the coach of the 1983 championship University of Miami Hurricanes team.

He was a recruiter of such quarterbacks through the years as Joe Namath and Bernie Kosar, so we asked him to evaluate Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

"He's got enough talent.  He's the right kind of guy.  He's what you look for to be the leader of your team..what now has to come together is the balance of the team has to rise."

FAU will be naming the field at the school's football stadium after the first guy to coach a team on it.

"It feels really good.  It's the greatest compliment that a coach could have.  To have the stadium that was built while you were there, to dedicate the field portion of it.  Then, to carry your name forever.  Very few people have that happen."

Schnellenberger says it's "probably the highlight of my coaching career", and for a man who has coached such players as Jim Kelly and recruited a guy named Joe Namath for Bear Bryant at Alabama, that's saying a lot.

The dedication ceremony will happen  before the Owls' home opener against Tulsa on September 13th.

Schnellenberger will be at the FAU bookstore in Boca Raton from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today.
