Trump's approval & our view of the direction of the country

The President's approval and our view of the direction of the country for March 23rd

Bottom Line: This is one of two weekly tracking stories to get a reality/temperature check regarding what's really going on with public opinion of the President. In this series we'll track the high point, low point and current ratings...

  • Trump's lowest ratings: 37% approval and 59% disapproval: -22% (8/4/17)

  • Trump highest approval ratings 45% approval and 43% disapproval +2% (1/27/17):

  • Trump's current ratings: 42% approval and 53% disapproval: -11%

President Trump's approval rating is up 2 points over two weeks ago overall and every sample has his approval at 40% or better over the past week.

Also, as I've been tracking for many months...The more likely someone is to vote, the higher the President's overall approval rating.

  • With adult only samples his rating over the past week averaged: 40%

  • Registered voters: 42%

  • Likely voters: 47%

Taking a look at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%

  • Wrong Track: 59%

  • Net: -29%

Last Week:

  • Right Direction: 35%

  • Wrong Track: 56%

  • Net: -21%

And Today:

  • Right Direction: 38%

  • Wrong Track: 54%

  • Net: -16%

Change: +13% under Trump & +5% over the previous update.

On another note...For months in the weekly look at President Trump's approval rating I've broken out the difference in Trump's approval based on the level of political engagement. Simply put, the more engaged someone is the higher the President's approval rating. We're also seeing that show up in the direction of the country question. Consider...

On the question of whether the country is heading in the right direction...

  • With Registered voters: 35%

  • With Likely voters: 41%

Just as is the case with Presidential approval... The more engaged and informed one is the higher the overall level of optimism.
