The President's approval and our view of the direction of the country for June 1st
Bottom Line: This is a weekly story to get a reality/temperature check regarding what's really going on with public opinion of the President and our view of the direction of the country. First here's the high point, low point and current ratings for President Trump...
Trump's lowest ratings: 37% approval and 59% disapproval: -22% (8/4/17)
Trump highest approval ratings 45% approval and 43% disapproval +2% (1/27/17):
Trump's current ratings: 44% approval and 53% disapproval: -9%
For the second straight week President Trump's average net approval rating dropped a point but he remains within 1% of his highest approval rating. The past two weeks have been a bit more challenging for the president given the developments with China on trade and North Korea regarding the potential meeting in Singapore but still the economy remains strong and potentially is still gaining momentum.
Also, as I've been tracking for many months... The more likely someone is to vote, the higher the President's overall approval rating.
With adult only samples his rating over the past week averaged: 40%
Registered voters: 45%
Likely voters: 47%
Looking at the direction of the country this week...
Where we stood on Inauguration Day:
Right Direction: 30%
Wrong Track: 59%
Right Direction: 39%
Wrong Track: 52%
Right Direction: 40%
Wrong Track: 54%
Change: +15% under Trump & -1% over the previous update.
Again, the geopolitical factors likely are part of the reason for the slightly less optimistic bend this week but we're still the sixth most optimistic we've been over the past nine years. Until next week...
