February was the coldest month in 50 years (Thank God for South Florida)

Bottom Line: It’s easy to forget the rest of the world exists during the winter in South Florida. At times blizzards and sub-zero temps almost seem like movies or TV shows rather than reality. But in the grand scheme of our altered state of near-perfect weather reality, last month was one for the history books. There are multiple ways that temperatures are often studied/measured and calculated (unfortunately these days it’s often agenda driven) but one of the longest running has been to calculate the ongoing temperature for the 48 contiguous states. Using that metric February was the coldest month in just over 50 years according to data from the National Weather Service.

Th last month that matched the cold the country saw in February was January of 1969. The coldest state in the country was Montana. How cold was it? The average temperature was nearly 28 degrees below usual for February and there was only one day, February 1st, where temperatures crossed above freezing anywhere in the state. Pretty crazy. In fact, it was the coldest month ever recorded for a state in US history and the streak of below freezing temperatures is also a new established record.

It’s a reminder that weather is unpredictable and South Florida’s pretty amazing.
