Weekly political update - President Trump's ratings and how they compare

Bottom Line:This is a weekly story to get a reality/temperature check regarding what's really going on with public opinion of the President and our view of the direction of the country. First here's the high point, low point and current ratings for President Trump...

  • Trump's lowest ratings: 37% approval (8/4/17)
  • Trump highest approval ratings: 45% approval (1/27/17)
  • Trump's current ratings: 43% approval

President Trump’s approval rating is flat against a week ago.Given the cycle it makes sense. There really hasn’t been any major political catalyst over the past week. Sure, congress has passed a bill that’d end the president’s national emergency declaration, but he’ll soon veto it and the courts will ultimately decide the outcome. In the meantime, be mindful that the wall project is on track through September based on the money obtained through the budget deal that ended the partial government shutdown.

There are still many moving pieces in Washington – non the least of which is the potential for the Muller probe to come to an end soon and new/old AG who’s just getting re-acclimated to his old job. Standby for news. I’m still cautiously optimistic that the rule of law still matters. Should that be the case, you could see the tables turned on deep-state actors that’d conspired against President Trump.

As has also been the case throughout his term thus far, the more informed and engaged someone is politically – the more likely they are to approve of President Trump.

  • Adult only samples averaged:40%
  • Registered voters: 43%
  • Likely voters: 49%

If he maintained this rating into the next cycle among likely voters, he’d be the prohibitive favorite to win re-election. What you never hear reported are the ratings of the Democratic leaders opposing him. Let’s just say they’d need a huge push of support to simply catch President Trump’s approval ratings. Here’s the latest...

  • Pelosi: 37%
  • Schumer: 29%

What does that tell you about what’s really going on in this country? Pelosi is six points behind Trump and Schumer dropped another point and is 14 points behind the president in overall approval. Two sides to stories and one side to facts. It’s just not what you get in the news media. Also, Looking at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction:30%

Today:

  • Right Direction: 35%

We’re off a point this week. We’re 5% collectively more optimistic than we were during the Obama administration.
