Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Wendy Sartory Link had promised that new voting equipment was on its way to replace the aging machines that her predecessor blamed for lengthy delays in recounts.
That new equipment began arriving last week and the supervisor says the final shipment comes Monday.
"We're getting what we call the 'shells.' The 'shells' are coming in now. Then the state actually has to approve the programming before we then load them onto these pieces."
She ordered nearly 1,000 ballot scanners, more than 500 touch-screen voting machines for those with visual or hearing impairments and ten tabulators for her Riviera Beach tabulation center.
She says the new equipment will get its first use long before the 2020 Presidential election.
"We'll be using all of our new equipment in the March Presidential Preference Primary, which is March 17 (2020), so we'll be ready to go for that."
The machines will also get some use in August of next year, before the November election.
Meanwhile, Sartory Link is putting out the call for new poll workers for next year's elections and with brand new voting equipment, and she wants to get right on it.
"We need people to sign up now because we will start orientation meetings very soon, and we'll begin the training in the fall. And everybody, whether they've done it before or not, will have to go through training because we will have not only new voting equipment but also new voter registration processes."
She needs 4,500 workers for each election, and it takes a specific type of person.
"This is the face of our elections office. Whether an individual voter feels like they had a good voting experience or a poor voting experience is largely determined by their interactions with the poll workers on election day. We want to get people out there who are smart, calm, committed to doing this."
Sartory Link turns in her budget this week and is requesting raises for poll workers.
