Woman Dies After Being Hit By Float At Krewe Of Nyx Parade in New Orleans

A woman died after she was struck by a double-decker float during the Krewe of Nyx parade in New Orleans. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. as revelers were in the streets celebrating the start of the final week of Mardi Gras.

A witness told the New Orleans Advocate that the woman, who has not been identified, was crossing the street and tried to walk between two sections of the tandem float when she was run over. Another witness said the woman appeared to trip over the hitch connecting the two parts of the float.

After a delay, while the police investigated the accident, officials decided not to cancel the parade. They rerouted marching bands and other groups around the float, but all additional floats were ordered to turn around and return to their staging areas.

"On such a joyous night, this is obviously a tragic occurrence. The parade takes a backseat when something like this happens on the route. On behalf of the entire Krewe of NYX. Along with the City of New Orleans, we offer our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the individual involved," Captain for the Krewe of Nyx, Julie Lea, said in a statement.
