Child Calls 9-1-1 To Report Gruesome Attack

Police in Windermere are working with several different agencies as they investigate a double murder that may have started as a car burglary.

Ezekiel Hopkins allegedly tried to steal a car outside a home in Lake Crescent Reserve when he was confronted by its owners, John and Lisa Savey.

Police say Hopkins used a baseball bat to kill John Savey and injure his wife. Their son, James, was also beaten to death.

Police found Hopkins in the home, unconscious. He apparently drank bleach after the attack.

Hopkins is facing two counts of murder, but his condition is unknown.

Here's more information from a Windermere Police Department press release:

The Winter Garden Police Department 9-1-1 operator kept the child on the phone line while he hid in the bathroom and the suspect was in the residence with his grandfather, grandmother, and uncle identified above. Officers from the Windermere Police Department, the Ocoee Police Department, Oakland Police Department and deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to the burglary in progress. Unified Command was established and a joint team made entry inside the home. Hostage negotiators responded to the scene and began communicating with the suspect through a closed door. A tactical decision was made to make entry into the bathroom. The defendant, EZEKIEL EMANUEL HOPKINS, was located inside and arrested. The defendant was transported to Health Central as he appeared to have drunk bleach and was not very responsive while at the scene. The Windermere Police Department requested additional homicide detectives from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to assist with the scene and at the hospital. Detective Allen has secured a warrant for two counts of Murder F.S. 782.04(1)(a)and Aggravated Battery F.S. 784.045(2)on the suspect.
Further investigation revealed that the defendant, EZEKIEL EMANUEL HOPKINS, attempted to steal a vehicle from the residence at 2908 Sunbittern Court, Windermere, FL. The homeowners, John and Lisa Savey, confronted the defendant at which time he attacked John Savey, leaving him dead outside the residence. The defendant then went inside the residence and attacked Lisa Savey who had retreated into her home. The defendant also attacked John and Lisa Savey’s son, James Savey, leaving him dead inside the house. The defendant beat all three victims with a bat.Lisa Savey survived the attack, and was transported to the hospital where she was admitted with serious injuries. Additionally, prior to the 9-1-1 call members of the Ocoee Police Department observed a suspicious vehicle on Ocoee Apopka Rd behind a construction area. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed down McGuire Rd. and was not pursued pursuant to policy. The vehicle drove over a berm off Park Ave., through several yards and crashed into a tree next to the residence listed above. We believe this to be the same vehicle. The case is active and ongoing and we will have no further comment at this time.
