Keeping Deputies Safe From COVID-19 On The Job

COVID-19 continues to take a toll on first responders.

For Protecting the Palm Beaches, we often hear Brian announce the names of police officers who have died after contracting the virus on-duty.

Back in April, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Sergeant Diaz Ayala passed away from the coronavirus at the age of 38.

1290 WJNO asked Sheriff Ric Bradshaw how his deputies are doing these days.

"We've had a few that have been exposed, but fortunately they haven't had bad symptoms."

He says precautions are being taken everyday to keep his staff and the public safe.

"We have provided them with the best PPE stuff that we could find."

Also protocols have changed to keep distance between deputies and citizens when possible.

"The dispatchers are asking a lot of questions when they get a call. Anybody sick in the house? Anybody got a fever? Does the deputy have to come in? Can you meet him outside?"

The sheriff says they've also made it easy for deputies to make reports on non-emergency calls through things like Zoom and FaceTime.
