Florida News That Impacts You – May 21st, 2021

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Florida’s weekly trend for new COVID-19 cases has broken below 3,000 for the first time since October 19th and is the lowest since mid-October overall. This comes on back of Florida reporting 2,893 new cases on Thursday, the day which has consistently represented the peak day for new reported cases.
  • 9.8 million Floridians, including 55% of all adults, have been vaccinated with at least a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine with 7.8 million who’ve now completed a vaccine series. It’s now been over three weeks since Florida had a day where there were more recipients of a first dose of a Moderna or Pfizer vaccine than a second dose.
  • In addition to the bill ratifying Governor DeSantis’s renegotiated Seminole Compact making it to his desk on Thursday, so did the Social Media Platforms bill. This is the legislation which bans social media censorship of political speech in Florida and could setup a showdown with multiple big tech companies.
  • Tomorrow the first Unclaimed Property auction since the onset of the pandemic will take place at the Miami Airport Marriott. Items not claimed by Floridians are eventually sold at auction. This commonly includes items stored in safety deposit boxes which go unclaimed. To check to see if you have unclaimed propertyvisit:FLTreasureHunt.gov
