  • Governor DeSantis signed ten bills into law over the weekend including: the Nursing Education Pathway for Miliary Combat Medics bill which allows for college credit for time served to fast-track nursing students; the Assault or Battery on Hospital Personnel bill, which raises penalties for violence against hospital staff by patients or visitors; the Abandoned and Historic cemeteries bill, which preserves historical Black cemetery sites across the state and the Motor Vehicle Glass bill which aims to reduce the cost of auto insurance policies by limiting abusive auto glass repair practices.  
  • 19 illegal immigrants, predominantly from Haiti, were detained in Pompano Beach on Sunday after a man noticed people climbing over the fence onto his property. It was discovered they’d been smuggled to Florida on a 40-foot fishing vessel.  
  • The college savings program, Florida Prepaid, is offering incentives that are running through June 30th. All new 529 Savings Plans opened under Florida Prepaid will receive $50 bonuses and ten participating families which visit a Florida State Park before June 30th will receive $1,000 scholarship and prize packs. 
  • A new FAU study has shown the extensive sargassum blooms which have washed ashore contain high levels of pathogens, including Vibrio, or what’s known as flesh-eating bacteria. You’re advised to avoid the seaweed, especially if you have open wounds.  
  • Gas prices rose a bit through the weekend. Statewide the average price for regular unleaded is $3.41 per gallon – two cents higher than a week ago. In the Palm Beaches, the price is $3.61 per gallon, which is the second highest in the state.
