Is Florida Past the Peak of Flu Season?

Bottom Line: It’s a little premature to declare that Florida is definitively past the peak of flu season, however there’s a good chance that’s the case. Unsurprisingly, in most years, Florida’s flu season tends to peak around the holidays. That’s not only due to families and friends coming together, but it’s also due to more Americans traveling to Florida during the holiday season than any other state. Right on cue, the CDC’s latest flu map shows that as we’ve moved past the holiday season, we’re rapidly seeing declines in flu cases across our state with overall trends showing the lowest transmission rates within the state on this date in four years (2021’s COVID year).

According to the latest report from the Florida Department of Health flu cases are only rising in 13 of Florida’s 67 counties, all in north Florida, with cases decreasing in 51 counties including Palm Beach and all of the Treasure Coast (case rates aren’t currently rising or falling in Broward and Miami Dade). And it’s not just flu cases that are declining, notably RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, cases rapidly declining as well.

RSV cases are only rising in six counties with declines in 53 counties including Broward, Palm Beach and Martin. And as for COVID-19 specifically, Florida’s transmission rate is among the lowest in the country currently with moderate activity reported.

It’s a little early to declare victory over flu season this year, especially with cooler than usual weather this winter, that can lead to more people being indoors in close contact with one another, but there’s no doubt that the trends are our friend along with seasonality.
