- Florida ranks second nationally in Taxpayer ROI according to an annual study by WalletHub – with New Hampshire ranking first. The study measured taxpayer outlays and the return on those funds across education, roads & bridges, hospital systems, violent-crime, water quality, and economic outcomes. Overall red states were found to provide far better ROI on average compared to blue states.
- The Army Corps of Engineers has announced an end to the eastern discharges of water from Lake Okeechobee. Effective Saturday, the discharges which began December 7th, will temporarily stop and according to the Army Corps, will only begin again if there’s a hurricane or related high-water event this year. The lake is currently a foot and a half lower than the usual average for this date and the discharge schedule that began in December was in clear violation of the Army Corps new Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual.
- A severe brush fire in Martin County spread to 150 acres on Thursday prompting voluntary evacuations of 32 homes in the Stuart West Cobblestone Community and those near Gator Tail. The fire took hold just north of Martin County Highway near 84th street in the early afternoon and grew for the next several hours before being contained late last night.
- Sunny skies and windy today with highs in the upper 70’s which is typical for this date. Winds will be gusting above 20 mph throughout the day. We’ll have cloudy conditions on Saturday with rain moving into our area by Sunday.
- Gas prices dropped a penny per gallon on Thursday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.14 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.30 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.19 and in Indian River County the average is $3.17 per gallon.
