More than 130,000 people have already signed a petition for Amazon to use Dogecoin as a payment method after the cryptocurrency had a surge in price last week!
Posted to Change.org, The "Doge4Amazon - Accept Dogecoin as a payment method" petition, claims that Amazon is "alienating many people who do not have a traditional bank account" by not offering Dogecoin as a form of payment.
The cryptocurrency, which began as a joke in 2013, has skyrocketed, pushing its valuation to nearly $50 billion!
It is based on a popular meme of the Japanese Shiba Inu dog and is already being used by many small businesses, charity organizations, and entrepreneurs. If Amazon chooses to accept Dogecoin transactions, it would be one of the first major corporations to use it as a payment method.
High-profile celebrities and business leaders like Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Snoop Dogg, have tweeted about the cryptocurrency and can be credited in helping raise Dogecoin's popularity.
Just last week, Musk posted another tongue-in-cheek tweet alluding to Dogecoin.
Aside from that, the cryptocurrency also gained attention from users on a Reddit forum that helped prompt a surge as well!
Representatives for Amazon, however, have not yet responded for comment.
