Latest Party ID shows a dramatic shift in just one year - The Real America:
Bottom Line: Gallup studies party ID with regularity and they've been providing the information right along since 2004. There are a couple of notable changes with the data coming out of January of 2017.
Democrats have their lowest party ID since this tracking began in 2004
What we see with Republicans winning the most elected offices in the US since 1926 is reflected in the party ID numbers.
In January of 2016 party ID looked like this:
- Democrats: 29%
- Independents: 44%
- Republicans: 26%
Here's where we are today:
- Democrats: 25% (-4%)
- Independents: 44% (flat)
- Republicans: 28% (+2%)
That 6% swing in one year is significant and endemic of what we saw last November. The direction the Democrats take from here will be critical for the future viability of the party beyond it's dedicated 25% of voters.
