Sign of improving economic times...More than half of Americans have their eyes open for better career opportunities:
Bottom Line: It's an economic truism that's always been a little bit of an oddity. When the economy improves more people look to leave their existing jobs. It makes sense when you intellectualize the reasons (more job opportunities, less employment risk if job hopping doesn't work out & often more money). It's typical for a third or so of Americans to be looking for potential opportunities regardless of the economy but when most that are already employed are actively opening their eyes - that's notable. That's also exactly what's going on right now.
According to Gallup's State of the American Workplace study - 51% of those actively employed are actively seeking new employment or at least checking current job postings/openings regularly.
This jibes with other data we've seen that suggests that the best way to get a significant raise is to job hop. Here's the added benefit for potentially those who aren't interested leaving their existing job/company. We'll likely see increased pressure on raises for employee retention purposes as employers feel the pinch of losing skilled talent to other companies.
