College education vs. real world experience - the latest on the contrast in the workplace:

Bottom Line: Here's a question for you. What's more difficult to hire for currently... An advanced skill position or entry level? On the surface it may seem obvious but the obvious answer isn't most commonly correct. According to the latest research from the Rockefeller Foundation:

  • 43% say entry level is the hardest to hire for currently
  • 90% of those with college degrees have to train extensively on the job

What we've seen in recent years is that many job postings, even for entry and intermediate level employment, have added college degrees as a requirement. If the college education is really needed - so be it. If it's just a limiting factor, and you're struggling to fill positions, you should probably rethink the arbitrary education requirement. The irony is that those with experience for those positions are actually proven to be far more ready to step in quickly.
