The future of the world's major religions:

The future of the world's major religions:

Bottom Line: Perhaps you've heard that Muslims are expected to become the leading world religion in the not-so-distant future. According to the latest projection from the Pew Research Center - that's exactly what they expect to happen. Here's the current data on the major world religions:

Population percentage worldwide:

Christians: 31.2%

Muslims: 24.1%

Unaffiliated: 16%

Hindus: 15.1%

Buddhists: 6.9%

Folk Religions: 5.7%

Others: .8%

Jews: .2%

So while Christians are currently the prominent world religion - the projected growth rates going forward will likely change the dynamic going forward:

Projected future growth rates through 2060:

Muslims: +70%

Christians: +34%

Hindus: +27%

Jews: +15%

Folk: +5%

unaffiliated: +3%

Buddhists: -7%

So based on these growth rates, it's likely that the pendulum would swing towards a majority of Muslims as early as the 2030's.
