Tax time update with less than a week to go - The IRS has made a lot of progress with tax filing fraud:
Bottom Line: At the onset of tax season I shared the 2016 scorecard from the IRS with you. Among the noteworthy stats...progress had been made with regard to combating tax filing fraud. In 2016 there was a 20%+ improvement in stopped fraudulent tax filing attempts over 2015's tax season. The IRS also indicated that they thought that they'd have even more success this year. With the 2nd to last update in, that seems to be the case.
According to the IRS 85% of fraudulent tax filing attempts had been stopped through March. That's another 20% or so improvement from last year - so the IRS is making solid progress. That being said it's likely that billions will still have been stolen from us (taxpayers) and if you're ever the victim by virtue of having your ID being stolen - it's a nightmare so progress is good but we're not there yet...
