Tracking Trump - Direction of the Country 4-20-17:

Bottom Line: This Friday feature is designed for political junkies who missed my Friday political series from the election cycle. For years, despite generally favorable approval ratings for President Obama, we'd collectively been unhappy with the overall direction of our country. In the early months of the Trump Presidency we're seeing a bit of a shift with a less popular President but a bit more optimistic country generally. This week's update is a day early as I'm out tomorrow.

In this entry I'll be tracking the overall view of the direction of the country led by President Trump.

Here's where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%
  • Wrong Track: 59.1%
  • Net Negative: -29.1%

Last week's ratings:

  • Right Direction: 35.3%
  • Wrong Track: 54%
  • Net Negative: -18.7%

And today:

  • Right Direction: 35.5%
  • Wrong Track: 54%
  • Net Negative: -18.5%

Change: +10.6% since Inauguration Day & +.2% vs last week

The three week losing streak with the direction of the country question has been broken as there was a tiny bump higher over last Friday's update. The past week has been full of large news events but not necessarily those that would impact our overall view of the country. On one hand foreign policy is still the most significant driver of the national conversation but what Americans want most is substantive legislative reforms on healthcare and taxes.

Next week is a big week with Congress back in session. Will Republicans have gotten their act together to begin to move the legislative needle? Many voters are restless and they need to be able to demonstrate that they can successfully move the agenda forward.

Until next week...
