Bottom Line: The good news is that 6 in 10 Americans are generally prioritizing the two best investment classes for ROI but that still does mean that there's a lot of room for improvement. The trend in recent years has been positive. As a reminder here are the historic average rates of return for each investment option:

  • 10.1%: Stocks
  • 4.2%: Real-estate
  • 4%: Bonds
  • 2.2% Gold
  • 2% Savings

Here were the top investment priorities of Americans in 2011 according to Gallup:

  • 34%: Gold
  • 19%: Real-Estate
  • 17%: Stocks
  • 14%: Savings accounts
  • 10%: Bonds

So you can see how misplaced our investment priorities were based on the raw emotions as we were on the mend from the Great Recession. Here's our current prioritization:

  • 34%: Real-Estate
  • 26%: Stocks
  • 18%: Gold
  • 13%: Savings
  • 5%: Bonds

So 60% of Americans have the proper prioritization currently compared to just 36% 5+ years ago. That's progress but we've got a lot further to go...
