Tracking Trump - Direction of the Country 5-12-17:

Bottom Line: This Friday feature is designed for political junkies. For years, despite generally favorable approval ratings for President Obama, we'd collectively been unhappy with the overall direction of our country. In the early months of the Trump Presidency we're seeing a bit of a shift with a less popular President but a bit more optimistic country generally.

In this entry I'll be tracking the overall view of the direction of the country led by President Trump.

Here's where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%
  • Wrong Track: 59.1%
  • Net Negative: -29.1%

Last week's ratings:

  • Right Direction: 34.5%
  • Wrong Track: 52.5%
  • Net Negative: -18%

And today:

  • Right Direction: 36.75%
  • Wrong Track: 54.75%
  • Net Negative: -18%

Change: +11.1% since Inauguration Day & flat vs last week

President Trump's approval ratings took it in the shorts this week but that didn't translate into our general view of things that matter to us. There wasn't a change our overall optimism - just more people with an opinion. What we've seen of late is that if the biggest news is about stuff getting done that we care about (Supreme Court, budget deal, healthcare) there's positive movement.

When there's just a lot of noise our optimism has waned. Based on that thought you can probably see what I'd expect to happen to our collective optimism over the next week based on the current "Killing Trump" news cycle (that's a bit more ironic given O'Reilly's current state of affairs).

This remains an extremely important window of time. Forget Comey for a moment...that frankly doesn't really matter to most of us. What's to come in the Senate with the GOP healthcare bill? Will tax reform get done? The natives are restless and want better policy out of Washington - not just the talk. So will they get the job done?

Until next week...
