You might not be the only one looking forward to your summer vacation - what to know before you leave:
Bottom Line: When you look at the National Hurricane Center's map today & you see a few disturbances lurking, it's a reminder it's August. When you get in your car in the mid-afternoon, you're reminded it's August (The first week of August is typically the hottest week of the year in South Florida). But the last thing you want to realize is that your August vacation is also part of an unwanted trend... Your home being burglarized.
CNBC produced an excellent story aggregating research from Verisk Analytics and Travelers insurance. Here's the less than good news...
- The fourth most common home insurance claim is theft (1 in 235 homes per year!)
- The average loss is nearly $4k
- August is the peak month for home burglaries with 13% of all home thefts taking place (July is 2nd highest with 12%)
Simply put, more people go on vacation during August than any other month and more thieves are taking advantage of it than any other month. Having good home security and doing what you can to make it look like someone's still home are especially important this time of year.
