Florida's recap – Highlights from around the state – August 21st

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Florida’s House Democratic delegation is calling for a special state session to address “gun violence” in Florida. This despite the 2018 passage of gun control measures statewide and the regular state session scheduled to begin in January. Three-fifths of both chambers must approve a special session before one is scheduled
  • The Broward School District revoked the charter for the Championship Academy of Davie for what the District said was the failure to provide an adequate security plan to comply with the state law of at least one-armed security guard per school. 532 students attended the school.
  • Yesterday a first of its kind Telehealth program was rolled out to school districts impacted by hurricane Michael in the panhandle. 63 kiosks and iPad portals were installed in all schools hit by the hurricane aimed at providing counseling to children dealing with storm related trauma. This is part of Casey DeSantis’s Hope for Healing plan.
  • Florida AG Ashley Moody has issued a new warning about fake websites emulating Equifax’s site for victims entitled to compensation under Florida’s settlement with the company. The official site, and only legitimate one, is www.Equifaxbreachsettlement.com
