Florida's recap – Highlights from around the state – August 22nd

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • The Miami Dolphins broke ground on their future training complex in Miami Gardens. The $135 million project is expected to be completed in time for the team to use the complex for the 2021 season
  • Governor DeSantis indicated Florida is moving ahead with the plan to join the Electronic Registration Information Center, in advance of the 2020 elections, which connects states voter registration from other states to ensure voters aren’t registered to vote in more than one state. 28 states currently use the system which aids in cleaning out old registrations in addition to potentially identifying those who’ve intentionally registered to vote in multiple states.
  • The Governor also indicated he doesn’t believe there will be a special session, that’s being pursued by state Democrats seeking to pass additional gun control measures. Three-fifths of both chambers are required to vote for a special session before one would convene.
  • 30 school security guards hired by charter schools in Palm Beach County and trained by Invictus Security Services, failed to pass the state requirements for the Guardian program yet were passed through the program anyway. PBSO has refused to certify the guards due to deficient training. There were at least five significant deficiencies in the program/training.
