Weekend Rewind: Social media’s impact on marriages

Social media’s impact on marriages

Bottom Line: It’s not news that social media is a double-edge sword. It’s also not new that marital problems can result from social media use. What is new is the extent of the impact it’s having on marriages. The new number three cause of divorce is – related to social media. Commonly cited in legal docs as “communication” or the lack thereof as the case may be when your spouse is more interested with social media than you. Heck, even the second leading cause of divorce, infidelity, is being driven by social media these days as a third of affairs derive from social media contacts. So, what should you watch out for? What are the warning signs?

According to a study from Bustle a quarter of couples argue about something pertaining to social media use at least once a week. Facebook is the most common culprit, which makes sense given that it has the highest level of use. If this is you,and nothing’s changing, you might have a problem on your hands if something doesn’t change. In Florida, where all social media use is admissible in court, 81% of disputed divorces involve evidence from social media being used against one party or both. The point is this. About a quarter of marriages are in trouble right now with social media use as a catalyst. If this is an issue in your relationship, it’s important you resolve it before it ends it.
