Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Health and Human Services announced that it will not renew the contract from the operator of the Homestead Detention Center which expires November 30th. Without an operator the facility will be inactive, though could potentially be reopened in the future. The facility hasn’t accepted new children since July 3rd.
  • Florida’s Home sales boomed in September rising 11.5% year over year with median prices rising 5.3% on back of low mortgage rates. 
  • Lyft launched a pilot program called the “Job Access Program” offering free rides to job interviews in 35 cities across the country. The cities in Florida picked for the program are Jacksonville, Tallahassee and Tampa. Under the program rides are offered to and from the job interview and eventually work for up to three weeks.
  • Four of the Five employees at Port Everglades taken down in an FBI sting of abuse of taxpayer money through illegal use of P-cards were sentenced to federal prison and ordered to pay in excess of $400,000. The fifth is set to be sentenced next month.
