Florida News – Highlights from around the state – March 30th

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • As verified COVID-19 cases doubled over the weekend, Governor DeSantis issued an order for checkpoints on I-10 and I-95 into Florida. He’s specifically concerned about people entering from Louisiana along I-10 and from the northeast on I-95.
  • Given the consistent influx of flights from New York and the continued disobedience of stay-at-home orders in north-east states, along with the state’s inability to stop them - Governor DeSantis is calling on airlines to step up accountability. Specifically, the governor wants prescreening prior to boarding flights with airlines using discretion to turn passengers away if they suspect a person is ill. There’s been no commitment by any airlines to do this.
  • Governor DeSantis confirmed Florida is set to receive thousands of tests which can produce results in 45 minutes. He said the initial tests will be available in South Florida and Jacksonville this week.
  • 14 crew members of Royal Caribbean's Oasis of Seas tested positive for COVID-19 upon the ship’s recent return to Miami’s Port. All Royal Caribbean cruise ship operations are currently suspended.
  • Adjusted for population, the highest concentration of cases in Florida are in these counties: Broward, Miami-Dade, Sumter, Monroe and Alachua.
