Florida News That Impacts You – January 24th, 2022

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Florida's trend for new Covid cases continued to rapidly improve over the weekend. Entering this week Florida’s weekly trend for daily cases is down to 37,414. That’s the lowest total since December 30th and 28,000 daily cases below peak levels earlier this month. Related...
  • Entering today 11,140 Floridians hospitalized were Covid positive. That’s a decrease of nearly 200 patients over the weekend. Hospitalizations include all patients who are Covid positive, as opposed to those who’re specifically hospitalized due to the virus.
  • COVID-19 attributed deaths continue to decline. Florida most recently averaged 69 daily Covid-attributed deaths. That’s a decline of 1 day over the prior day totals and remains well below peak levels reached during the delta surge which brought over 400 daily deaths.
  • As the third week of Florida’s legislative session kicks off today, there’s an apparent rare rift between Governor DeSantis and the Florida legislature. Last week Governor DeSantis submitted his own proposed Congressional redistricting map for the legislature to consider. The Senate ignored the plan in advancing one of their own maps. DeSantis’ General Council Ryan Newman, who submitted the map on the Governor’s behalf, hinted DeSantis may veto the Senate’s map which passed on a 31-4 vote – if that’s the version adopted by the legislature. The House is still weighing proposed maps.
