Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.  

  • Covid cases remain on the rise. With 11,439 new cases reported in Florida yesterday. We’re pacing about 9,200 daily cases over the past week, entering the weekend. That’s the highest since mid-February. Symptoms generally remain less severe than previous strains of the virus with hospitalizations remaining low.  
  • We’re entering Memorial Day weekend with record high gas prices. The statewide average remains $4.58 per gallon – in line with yesterday’s record high price for a gallon of regular unleaded. In South Florida prices range from $4.60 per gallon in Miami-Dade, to a new record high for the state of Florida - $4.71 per gallon in Palm Beach County. 
  • Governor DeSantis signed bipartisan condo inspection and property insurance reform legislation passed by the Legislature in this week’s special session. Specific to property insurance reform... The legislation boosts Florida’s reinsurance market, provides grant money for homeowners to make hurricane improvements through the My Safe Florida Home Program, reregulates roof insurance policies, reins in attorney fees and reforms assignment of benefits.  
  • Florida’s Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday kicks off tomorrow – running through June 10th. Tax-free supplies include most flashlights, lanterns, radios, tarps, coolers, batteries, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors and generators. Additionally, many pet supplies are also included.
