Florida News That Impacts You – July 26th, 2022

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Gas prices are another two cents lower today. Statewide, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $4.06 - 17 cents lower than a week ago. In Southeast Florida prices range from a low of $4.17 in Miami-Dade to $4.32 in the Palm Beaches. Speaking of improving trends...
  • Florida’s trend for new COVID cases continued the slow but steady decline on Monday. With just over 7,500 new cases reported yesterday, Florida’s weekly trend for daily cases fell to 10,800, which is the lowest in three weeks.
  • Florida’s already precarious property insurance situation is about to be even more challenged. Four Florida property insurance companies have already been liquidated this year due to the state’s property insurance crisis – driven largely by litigation issues – and today 27 additional insurance companies are set to receive ratings downgrades. The initial report last week suggested the total would be 17. Today’s downgrades will be the most extensive in the industry’s history. While none of the downgrades will likely lead to the imminent collapse of any of the providers – it will limit the ability for carriers to take on additional properties within the state, which will likely lead to more Floridians being forced over to Citizen’s Insurance (the state’s insurer of last resort).
  • Lobster mini-season begins at midnight and lasts through Thursday. All participants must have a saltwater fishing license. Catch limits of 6 per person exist in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park with 12 elsewhere. Lobsters must be longer than three inches on the hard part of the shell.
