Florida News That Impacts You – August 11th, 2022

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Gas prices have fallen another three cents per gallon on average today. The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded is now $3.70. In Southeast Florida prices range from an average low of $3.77 per gallon in Broward, to a high of $3.90 in the Palm Beaches.
  • Florida’s trend for new COVID-19 cases continued to fall on Wednesday. With fewer than 8,500 new cases reported, Florida’s weekly trend for daily cases has fallen below 8,300 for the first time since May 19th.
  • Florida’s new abortion law limiting abortions to 15-weeks under most circumstances is set to be appealed to Florida’s Supreme Court based on a statement from the ACLU – which is aligned with pro-abortion groups challenging the state law. According to the ACLU, via their New York headquarters, a challenge will be filed within the next ten days. Florida’s law has been in force since July 1st.
  • Florida’s economy bucked the national recession for the first half of the year, continuing to grow at the fastest rate of any large state in the country. That’s reflected in small business bankruptcy filings as well. An analysis of South Florida business bankruptcy filings shows a 32% reduction in bankruptcy filings in the first half of this year. Nationally, small business bankruptcies rose by nearly 40% during the same time period.
