Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida. Gas prices continued lower through the weekend.
- Gas prices are another penny higher statewide today. The average price for regular unleaded is now $3.34 per gallon - 16 cents higher than a week ago. In Southeast Florida prices range from a low of $3.38 per gallon in Broward and Miami-Dade to an average high of $3.50 per gallon in the Palm Beaches. The recent increase in prices is close to mitigating the entire benefit of the state’s suspension of the 25.3 cent per gallon gas tax during October.
- According to the Florida Department of Education, all schools will be back online by next week, with classroom education set to resume in Charlotte, DeSoto, Lee and Sarasota counties next Monday, the 17th. Some schools were back online in those impacted counties yesterday. Many schools had been used as shelters during the impact of Hurricane Ian, and were used for staging and recovery efforts in many communities after the impact.
- Today is the voter registration deadline for participation in November 8th's midterm elections. To register one must be a US citizen 18 or older, a legal resident of Florida and not to have been convicted of a felony, without having completed the voting rights restoration process. One may register online with a local supervisor of elections website or registertovoteflorida.gov
- The Gubernatorial Debate between Ron DeSantis and Charlie Crist, which had originally been scheduled to take place this week, has been rescheduled for Monday, October 24th. The debate was postponed as a result of Hurricane Ian. CBS 12 will host the debate at 7pm from the Sunrise Theater in Fort Pierce as originally planned.
