It’s Election Day and Florida’s Political & Economic Trends are In

It’s Election Day and Florida’s Political & Economic Trends are In – Top 3 Takeaways – March 14th, 2023

  1. It’s Election Day...for right at a fifth of Palm Beach County’s registered voters today as 17 of PBC’s 39 municipalities are holding elections. If you live in Atlantis, Belle Glade, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Highland Beach, Hypoluxo, Juno Beach, Lake Clarke Shores, Lake Park, Lantana, Mangonia Park, Ocean Ridge, Palm Beach Shores, Palm Springs, South Bay and Tequesta – this means you. As I’m inclined to say, all elections have consequences, however it’s those closest to you which often have the biggest impact on your daily life. That said, typical turnout for local only elections is often below 20%. Turnout heading into today, via votes cast by mail, totaled 5.5%. We all care when we pay property taxes, we care about the safety of our communities and we care about the quality of our roads. People and issues which influence those types of decisions are on ballots today. So, make sure your voice is heard with your vote, even if most around you probably won’t. Speaking of politics but of the partisan variety...
  2. The trend is not Florida Democrats’ friend. Another month and another debacle for Democrats in Florida. Many have wondered, and many politicos have publicly suggested, that the record red wave in Florida last November would be as good as it would get for Republicans in Florida. With a record number of Republicans elected top to bottom in Florida, including record Republican representation in congress, a super majority in the state legislature, and the largest margin of victory for a Republican candidate since reconstruction, the premise is reasonable. There’s ample reason to believe 2022 was as good as it gets for Florida’s Republican Party. But the trend, it’s very much not Florida Democrats’ friend. There are 104,000 fewer registered Democrats in Florida today than were registered to vote on November’s Election Day. And while NPA and Republican voter registrations continued to meaningful climb in February, the hemorrhaging continued for Florida’s Democrats. And what did Nikki Fried, the just elected state chair of the Florida Democrat Party have to say on Monday? Joe Biden is good for the economy, pass it on. No, I’m serious. Nikki Fried, who has a proclivity to weed, actually tweeted out Joe Biden is good for the economy, pass it on. We’ve had twenty consecutive months with inflation rising faster than wages, a technical recession and on the day ole ‘Joe addressed the country due to fears of a looming banking crisis Nikki’s here to tell us that Joe Biden is good for the economy, pass it on. I’ve long said you can lie to people about policy and those who are inclined to believe you will for a time, but you can’t lie to people about what is or isn’t in their wallet. They know. And Floridians know Joe. His approval rating in Florida? 38%. The percentage of people who think the economy is getting better 21%. So, Nikki, Floridians know Joe, pass it on. There’s a very real chance Nikki Fried could do more damage to Florida’s Democrat Party than Tallahassee’s favorite bisexual criminal did. The trend isn’t Florida’s Democrats’ friend and Fried often sounds like sounds like she’s fried, or should I say baked? But where the economy is strongest right now is...
  3. Right here at home. Fresh off of Friday’s news that Florida’s general revenue collections beat expectations by nearly 22%, or $748 million, to start the year in January, came Monday’s news that Florida’s economy continues to blow the door off of what’s happening nationally. Florida’s unemployment rate, at 2.6%, is one full percentage point, or 38% lower than the national average and has outperformed the national economy for 27 consecutive months. Florida’s job growth at 5.3%, has grown faster than the national average by 32% over the past year and has outpaced the overall economy for 22 consecutive months. We’ve got our challenges, sure. But there’s no doubt we’ve got the best economy right here at home. And I’m not tired of winning.
