- Florida’s 60-day state legislative session got underway on Tuesday with Governor DeSantis's State of the State speech. The governor called for spending less in the upcoming fiscal year than in the current year to prioritize paying down the state’s debt and strengthening pension programs. DeSantis called for reforming condo association mandates passed in the wake of the Champlain Towers South Collapse in Surfside and for easing gun control measures within the state passed under 2018’s Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Act. The governor also pressed the legislature to pass a proposed amendment to eliminate property taxes. The session will run through May 2nd.
- The first bill to clear a legislative chamber was the Chronic Disease Flexible Cover Act which would allow employers that currently offer high-deductible health insurance coverage to opt for pre-deductible coverage for many health-related services for common illnesses and treatments. The bill now goes to the state senate.
- A new study shows that Florida remains the top destination for retirees. The study of relocations of retirees by StorageCafe showed Florida has not only remained the top retirement destination in the country, but is favored by greater than double that of the second most popular retirement state most recently – North Carolina.
- Warm and windy today with highs in the low to mid 80’s – warmer than usual for this date. Much cooler weather will move into the area tonight with temps dropping into the 50’s overnight and Thursday’s highs in the low 70’s.
- The price of gas rose five cents per gallon on Tuesday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.08 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.22 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.09 and in Indian River County the average is $3.07 per gallon.
