Florida News That Impacts You – May 12th, 2026  

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.   

  • Today, the special state legislative session to pass a budget will begin. The session is scheduled to run through May 29th. A balanced budget is required by the state’s constitution and must be in place prior to the start of the state’s fiscal year on July 1st. While in West Palm Beach addressing the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches yesterday, House Speaker Daniel Perez noted that progress towards a budget between the House and Senate had been achieved since the end of the regular session. 
  • Governor DeSantis announced that Florida’s red snapper season will last 39 days this year, up from two days last year. The season will begin May 22nd lasting through June 20th, followed by three, three days weekends during the first three weekends of October. The increase in the season has come amid rising populations of red snapper which has been called a conservation success by the state.  
  • Four communities are receiving federal funds for enhanced emergency operations and hurricane preparedness. Greenacres, Lake Worth Beach and Wellington will each receive just over $1 million for new Emergency Operation Centers, while Boynton Beach will receive approximately $1.15 million to replace the seawall at Boynton Harbor Marina. 
  • Lake Worth Beach Commissioners have voted to solicit proposals for the commercial use of the ballroom on the second floor of the Lake Worth Beach Casino Building. The ballroom has remained unused for several years. 
  • It’ll be warm and humid today with a chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day today with highs in the mid to upper 80’s throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast – a little warmer than for this date. Similar weather is expected over the next few days. 
  • Gas prices fell by four cents per gallon to $4.36 statewide. In Palm Beach County the average price is $4.60 per gallon, in Martin the average is $4.50, it’s $4.47 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $4.47 per gallon.
