The run-off for the District 6 seat on the Palm Beach County School Board is in our Election Spotlight.
Each time incumbent Marcia Andrews is asked about the Parental Rights in Education law, which critics called "Don't Say Gay," she has this answer.
"We don't do that here in Palm Beach County. It's never been taught. I've been a teacher, certainly been a part of the education system for a long time. So we're not teaching that."
But challenger Jen Showalter says a local teacher last year showed her that it was being taught.
"She sent me a file that they were forcing the kindergarten, first and second grade teachers to give to the students and it's a flyer and there's this little gingerbread man on it. And it has the genital area circled and it says "Who are you sexually attracted to?"
Andrews acknowledges that the law will keep gender identity and sexual orientation out of schools, while continuing to insist it isn't happening in the county.
"I think the law is very preventive for making sure it never happens anywhere in the state of Florida."
Showalter also has education concerns, claiming teachers tell her that they were not allowed to fail a child because it would cost the school district funding...and she did her research.
"Thirteen out of the top 20 high schools failed their reading proficiency, fourteen out of the top 20 failed their math proficiency, but we have an A graduation rate. That corresponds with what the teachers were saying about they were being forced to move the kids forward."
Andrews does indeed promote a 95.9 percent graduation rate.
