For the first time in over 20 years, there will be a new public defender in Palm Beach County. There are two candidates running in a Democrat primary.

There are no Republicans or third-party candidates running so this primary is open to all registered voters in the county.

Carey Haughwout is NOT running for another term and criminal defense attorney Adam Frankel says he wants the job, heading up an office where he once worked.

"I was hired by then-Public Defender Richard Joranby in January of 1999 to serve as an assistant public defender in his office. He was challenged by Carey Haughwout in 2000 and she won the election. So she took over in, my belief is January 2001."

The former Delray Beach City Commissioner knows one of the first things he wants to accomplish should he get elected to this position.

"In the United States we have over 500 juvenile mental health courts, in the state of Florida and in Palm Beach County, there are none. And what I would like to do is, whoever the next state attorney is, whoever she or he may be, let's get together and make that a priority for the beginning of next year."

Frankel's opponent is Daniel Eisinger, the current Chief Assistant to the Public Defender.

Despite repeated attempts to get him to take part in this story, Eisinger's campaign team did not make him available to us.
