Martin County Commission District 5 Incumbent Ed Ciampi is being challenged by two fellow Republicans in this primary, which is open to all county voters since there are no Democrats or third-party candidates seeking this seat.

Commissioner Ciampi did not respond to our requests for him to be interviewed, but we have both of his challengers.

If Bruce Nathan's name sounds familiar, it's because he ran for the U.S. Senate in Florida in 2016 and two years later for governor.

He's a physical therapist and operates a farm and animal rescue in Palm City. One of Nathan's main priorities is a common one among those running against incumbents in Martin.

"We are overdeveloping our county. It's a small county. We were meant to be a small county. I moved here in 2000 to keep it a small county and I see all of the county commissioners just ransacking it, just running it down."

Candidate Michael Syrkus describes himself as a 'near-lifelong' resident of Martin County. He has restaurant management experience and is currently in construction.

"I decided to run for the office because when I look at our taxes in particular and the expenditures in particular, I notice that we're spending money we simply don't have. It's forced us to really beg for development and really look for a higher volume of development in the community because we're just desperate for tax dollars."
