There are three races for the Martin County Commission and we've already heard from the candidates in Districts 3 and 5. Those are both universal primaries because only Republicans are running. District 1 is a different story.
Candidate Eileen Vargas is challenging Incumbent Commissioner Doug Smith but with a write-in candidate in this race, that means it's closed to any voters other than registered Republicans.
Vargas has been involved in several industries, she has been an import-export business owner, a school teacher and currently works as a wealth advisor with her husband.
"So we understand about finances and proper planning. And so I take all of this broad experience to the voters of Martin County. We need people who understand the dynamics of budgeting and what revenue streams are and to make it affordable for those that live here."
She says that her wealth of knowledge is something that is not curently evidenced on the Martin County Commission.
Vargas wants no more zoning exceptions for developers and calls for what she refers to as a "disciplined approach to growth" to protect the environment.
We reached out to Smith multiple times but have not heard back.
This race is open to all registered Republicans in Martin County.
