Local Police Conducted Active-Shooter Training Ahead Of Back To School

As Palm Beach County's public school students return to class on Monday, police say they're ready to protect them.

The Jupiter Police Department is one of several that are still providing officers to cover for vacancies within the school district as it continues to hire school resource officers.

Police Chief Dan Kerr had advice for parents to tell their kids in case of a mass shooter.

"The schools, we have Code Red drills and Blue drills and things like that. Make sure your children listen to what they're being instructed to do in the event there is an emergency."

Jupiter Police spent hours over the summer doing active shooter training on some school campuses and they worked with officers from other nearby agencies, like the Sheriff's Office and Palm Beach Gardens Police.

That's just in case officers from another jurisdiction respond first.

"Whoever the first group that gets there are going to go right in."

Chief Kerr says his department has been doing this type of training for at least ten years.
