Smelly Sewage Situation In Ft. Lauderdale After 54-inch Main Ruptures

Contractors spending all night in Ft. Lauderdale trying to figure out exactly why a 54-inch sewer main broke, creating a smelly "brown river" of dirty debris in the ritzy Rio Vista neighborhood along Ponce De Leon Drive. Ft. Lauderdale Commissioner Steve Glassman says there were no construction projects going on there, but they knew the 50-year-old pipe was in need of maintenance. Just last week, commissioners approved a 19-million-dollar project to replace the exact section of pipe that burst. Raw sewage is spilling into the streets and nearby Tarpon River. No word yet on when it will stop or the environmental impact. Drinking water is not affected, but residents are being asked to limit their water use to help reduce the flow of sewage.
