Governor urges everyone to stay calm as virus deaths hit record high.

There's a lot of community spread of the coronavirus going on in Florida but things aren't out of control says Governor Ron DeSantis on Thursday as Florida set a new single-day record for COVID-19-related fatalities- 120.

The previous high was 83 back in April.

"We understand much more about this virus," the governor said in Jacksonville. "You should take precautions but there's no need to be panicked- there's no need to be fearful. We understand the situations that make this thing more transmissible"

And the governor says we know how to protect the most vulnerable Floridians.

On another hot topic, Governor DeSantis doubled down on the need to reopen Florida's schools next month. The governor says it's definitely doable and necessary to combat what he calls an 'education gap'--

"You talk to teachers about what happens over the summer and how there's a summer lag. Well geez- now we're from mid March all the way to now and in spite of good efforts with education online it's just not the same so I worry about that gap."

The governor also says he worries about what being away from school does in terms of socializing and allowing children to just be 'normal kids.'
