Palm Beach County Judge Sets Hearing For Schools Reopening Lawsuit

A hearing has been set in a lawsuit filed against the Palm Beach County School District.

Schools reopened on Monday, after a judge refused to halt the move. The suit was filed on Friday on behalf of several teachers who claim they were denied remote-work assignments despite being at risk to complications from COVID-19 due to their age or health conditions.

Attorney Barry Silver was hoping for a Monday hearing on the emergency motion, but a judge set it for 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Nearly 950 teachers stayed home Monday, which is nearly twice the number absent the first day of school last year. That left some students without classrooms for portions of the day. Deputy Superintendent Keith Oswald says in some cases those kids were sent into overflow rooms to study on their own until their next class began.

Meanwhile, the school district has launched its own COVID-19 dashboard aimed to keep parents and staff informed about the confirmed cases in schools. The dashboard is updated every night with confirmed cases by date, school, as well as the number of students and employees affected.

It's up at the district's website.
