The Palm Beach County School Board has voted to appoint Assistant Police Chief Patrick McCutcheon as the acting chief for the School District Police Department, while they conduct a nationwide search for a permanent replacement for Dan Alexander.

He became the second police chief to resign in under nine months upon announcing last week that he'd be stepping down.

Alexander's last day is Friday.

McCutcheon has been with the school police department since 2004, starting as an officer and moving up the ranks. He will be able to apply for the chief job permanently.

The school board also voted to again require face masks at all of their meetings.

The unanimous vote means anyone who isn't wearing a mask will be able to watch from a separate room and speak during public comment.

The school district is also requiring masks be worn by all staff and visitors on school campuses. Students are encouraged, but not mandated due to state law, to wear masks at school and on school buses.
