DeSantis: Fair Districts Amendments Should Be Thrown Out

ST. PETERSBURG -- Governor Ron DeSantis repeated his vow to veto the congressional redistricting map drawn up by state lawmakers.

At an appearance at a high school, the governor pointed to a bigger target in his battle with the Legislature.

DeSantis said lawmakers drew up their maps based on case law from the Fair Districts amendments passed by the voters in 2010. Lawsuits filed under those amendments in the previous decade forced the state to redraw its maps.

The governor told reporters Tuesday that the application of those amendments is "much broader than would be allowed under the 14th amendment".

DeSantis also said he didn't believe the federal Voting Rights Act would come into play.

The governor has drawn up maps that revamp two U.S. House districts in north and central Florida currently held by African-American Democrats.
