An apology letter from the group of middle school students whose racist photo made national news.

The six teens from Hidden Oaks Middle School in Palm City were seen holding up letters to form the N-word in a photo that went viral on social media.

In a statement addressed to the community and everyone that was hurt by the picture, the students said they were "wrong and made a big mistake."

They wrote that they "clearly didn't understand the full impact of it and how it hurts so many people." The letter goes on to say that the teens are "deeply sorry and ashamed" and they take full responsibility.

They also point out that they are being punished for their actions earlier this month.

The Martin County School District says it cannot disclose to the public what punishment the students are receiving, claiming that would violate state and federal laws.
